A glimpse of POS Barcode scanner

 Motorola li4278

The barcode scanner is that electronic equipment that can output and read the ‘printed barcodes’ to a computer. It consists of a light source, lens and lens sensor for translating ‘optical impulses’ into the electrical ones. The barcode scanners comprise of the ‘decoder circuitry’ which analyse image data of barcode offered by the sensor as well as by transmitting barcode content to the scanner’s output port.

Various Kinds of Barcode Scanners
There are various types of barcode readers or scanners from the single line barcode scanners, 2d barcode scanners to the iPhone and Android scanners.

o    Cordless Barcode Scanner: The battery-operated cordless barcode scanner has no connection to electricity mains and it transfers data like the PC.
o    Handheld Barcode Scanner: The handheld barcode scanners are equipped with the trigger button and handle for turning on the ‘light source’.
o    Camera-Based Scanners: These camera-based readers are the 2d barcode scanners. These make use of the ‘image processing’ techniques and the camera for decoding the ‘barcode’.
o    iPhone and Android Scanners: You can use the smartphones in Google’s Android ‘operating system’ through their ‘Google Goggles’ application. In ‘Apple iOS’ there is no barcode scanner but over 50 paid or free apps are available that have ‘hard-linking’ to URI and ‘scanning capabilities’.
o    ‘Pen-Type’ Scanners:  The ‘pen-type’ barcode readers consist of the light source and the photodiode that is located at the pen or wand tip. The photodiode measures ‘light intensity’ that is reflected from the ‘light source’ as the tip of the barcode crosses space in each bar and printed code.
o    Laser Scanners: The principle on which the laser scanners work is same as that of the pen-type scanners. The major difference between the two types of scanners is that the laser scanners use ‘laser beam’ as ‘light source’. They use the ‘reciprocating mirror’ or the ‘rotating prism’ for scanning laser beam to and fro across the barcode.
o    The LED scanners: CCD readers or LED scanners make use of many small light sensors that line up in a single row in the ‘head of the reader’. Each of the sensors measures the light intensity just in its front.
These are some of the barcode scanners that are widely used in the various sectors
