The printer is the device that helps in the representation of text or graphics on paper. There are different kinds of printers, like card printers, dot matrix printers, inkjet printers, etc. The widely used printers are the label and receipt printers.

Label printers differ from ordinary ones as they need a special mechanism for handling the fanfold and rolled stock. They are used widely for the marking of the retail price, management of supply chain, laboratory specimen, blood, and fixed assets.

Various Kinds of Label Printers based on Printing Mechanism

The label printers involve different printing mechanisms like impact, laser, or thermal. Desktop, personal, industrial printers, or RFID readers are the label printers that are widely used. The two most popular label printers are thermal transfer and direct thermal.

  • Direct Thermal:

Direct thermal printers are widely used for printing shipping labels. However, one drawback of using the direct thermal label printer is that they use heat-sensitive paper, and the labels fade in 6 to 12 months when exposed to direct heat, sunlight, or chemical vapor.

Thermal transfer printers make use of heat to transfer ink from the ribbon to labels during the permanent printing procedure.

Receipt Printer

Receipt printers find application in printing credit card and customer receipts. Such printers find wide applications in restaurants, kitchens, and bars.

Various Kinds of Receipt Printers

  • Dot-Matrix Printers:

The dot-matrix or impact printers are cheap and dependable and have low operating costs. They find applications in printing graphics, and they print in colors like black and red.
  • Thermal Printers:

Compared to the ‘dot matrix’ printers, the ‘thermal printers’ are costly. They are in great demand for their high-quality printing, silent function, and fast speed. Such printers can print without ink or toner and make use of direct contact in between thermal head and paper.
  • Inkjet Printers:

Inkjet printers help in the printing of colored logos, coupons, top-grade prints, etc.

With a fair knowledge of different types of printers, selecting the appropriate one would not be a challenging task for you.
